Famous for starring in "Can Gerry Robinson Fix the NHS?" and, more importantly, "How to Look Good Naked" (one of the theatre sisters was on the show!) Rotherham has a friendly Anaesthetics Department with a generally more gentle pace than the other DGHs. The specialties offered are general, orthopaedic, obstetric, gynae, paediatrics, max fac, ENT (day case), opthalmic and ITU. Each year there are approximately 11,000 cases in main theatres and 4,500 in day surgery. ITU has 6 beds.

The department is keen to use a variety of anaesthetic techniques and you can become familiar with TIVA, TCI infusions, remifentanil, desflurane and a range of regional procedures. There is an active interest in teaching with excellent support for study leave. Definitely a good place to get lots of revision done.

The Anaesthetics Department is comprised of 21 consultants and 4 associate specialists. Trainees numbers are in the range of 8 SpR/ST3+ and 9 SHO/ST1-2/FTSTA. The rota pattern is a 1 in 8 with long days 1300-2030 weekdays and 0800-2030 weekends. Weekends are Fri-Sun followed by the Mon night on-call. Nights run 2000-0830 and are currently single nights during the week, Fri-Sun at the weekend. 1st on-call covers theatres, A&E and cardiac arrest calls; 2nd on call covers ITU, HDU, ward referrals and obstetrics. Weekday morning 1st on-calls are shared between SHO/ST1-2, associate specialists and consultants.

The College tutors are Amanda Blackburn and John Clark but Dr Clark will be taking over fully quite soon. Protected teaching is provided on Friday afternoons and you are fully covered, effectively starting your on-call from 1700. Rotas are issued weekly with monthly on-calls patterns released towards the middle of the preceding month. The rotas are organised by Sharon so make sure you are nice to her!
