Anaesthetic Trivia - Curare
Curare is a compound used for dart poisons by tribes in South America. It is derived from vines such as, Chondrodendron tomentosum and Strychnos toxifera. The first non-depolarising muscle blocking agent, d-Tubocurarine, was identified in 1935 by Harold King. It was found in curare that had been packed in hollow tubes.

The College has produced new assessment documents - DOPS, CEX and CbD. These were posted onto the RCOA website recently and they were discussed at the last NTAEC meeting. The news is that we need to use these new forms from now on. The College has also released a specific guidance on what topics should be assessed by the new forms. This is particularly useful for those in ST3 and 4. Take a look at this document. One of the immediate advantages of the new forms is that they are likely to be much faster to use. There is no longer the need for the assessor to rate the trainee according to each domain if they are doing well. These areas are now only checked if the trainee in assessed as "unsatisfactory". Hopefully, this will mean it's easier for us to get enough forms signed off. We just have to remember to have them with us...
